What is the bijtelling for an electric lease car?

The (business) leasing of electric cars is becoming increasingly popular, and the government also encourages the use of these environmentally friendly vehicles. Therefore, until 2025 at least, no road tax needs to be paid for electric cars, and a lower bijtelling percentage applies to electric lease cars. However, there are some conditions and exceptions to consider, even for your business shortlease car.

Less bijtelling for new electric cars

The main condition to qualify for a lower bijtelling for your electric lease car is that it is from after January 1, 2019. Additionally, the original value of the car also plays a role. If it originally cost less than €50,000, and was thus put into use after January 1, 2019, you pay only 4% bijtelling. If the car is older, then the ‘normal’ rate of 22% applies. This rate is also applied to the remaining amount when your lease car has a value of more than €50,000. However, the 4% rate applies to the first €50,000.

Bijtelling gradually increases

To encourage drivers to switch to an electric lease car now, the benefit will be phased out in the coming years. In 2020, the bijtelling percentage will increase to 8%, in 2021 to 12%, in 2022 it will be 16%, in 2025 17%, and in 2026 you will pay the ‘usual’ rate of 22% bijtelling for an electric car. In addition, the maximum catalog value will decrease to €45,000 in 2020 and to €40,000 from 2021 onwards.
